Szandra és Krisztián (2019, forrás: Facebook)

Mivel idén, - ugyan rövidebb-hosszabb kihagyásokkal de, - immáron 11. éve írogatok bele az internetbe, gondoltam érdemes kicsit visszatekinteni, mit is. Összeszedtem neked tizenegyet a jelenleg sajnos elérhetetlen passzio.hu-n publikált, számomra kedves interjúkból, mert mégiscsak kérdezni a legjobb! Na meg hallgatni, mások történeteit, főként személyesen, mert amikor megtisztelnek azzal, hogy megmutatnak magukból valamit, az elképesztően jól tud esni. Ezért is indítottam anno egy rovat-szerűt, amivel a rock-metal színtérhez köthető elfoglaltságokról értekezünk többekkel. Ezen keretek közt több mamut terjedelmű írás is született, negyedikként hozom a Másként - sorozat egyik kedves beszélgetését, Szalai Szandrával. Minden Cateringek Királynője, semmit nem vesztett tündér mivoltából, az alábbi bevezető ma is ér.

Egy csodálatos hölgyeményt szeretnék picit jobban megismertetni Veletek. Szandrával már sokan találkozhattatok, majd minden koncerten "fellelhető", leginkább a backstage-ben, hisz ő és csapata gondoskodik arról, hogy a hozzánk érkező nemzetközi "nagyok" megkapják a kívánt ellátást, nem is akármilyet. Miközben a munkájáról, zenészekről, zenéről, koncertekről beszélgettünk, csak arra tudtam gondolni, mennyire más lenne a honi helyzet, ha kizárólag a hozzá hasonlók mozgatnák a szálakat. Arra buzdítanék mindenkit, hogy irigykedés helyett inkább önzetlenségéről és bivalyerős eltökéltségéről vegyen példát, mert ez a csaj rendkívüli, a Bors is megmondta! Őszintén? Én csak örülni tudok annak, ha külföldi kedvenceimnek ő az első gondolata, ha Budapest szóba kerül...

Másként – The Catering Queen interjú Szalai Alexandrával (2014/02/18)

Örülök, hogy látlak Szandra! Mivel szeretek nosztalgiázni, mi mással is kezdhetnénk? Több, mint 15 éve vagy a szakmában, az első önálló bulidon a Morbid Angel-t etetted, emlékszel még, mi került az asztalra?

A kajára már biztos, hogy nem, valami pörköltféle volt, az tuti. Viszont arra pontosan emlékszem, mi történt még aznap. Sosem felejtem, ahogy Pete Sandoval dobos betoppant. Képzelj el egy "hobó" kinézetű valakit, szakadt farmerban és pólóban, kioldott bakancsban, zilált hajjal. Természetesen rögtön kávét kért, amivel még nem is lett volna semmi baj, de végig csak kávézott, ki is számoltam, az egész nap folyamán majdnem két liter kávét fogyasztott el. Akkoriban még alig tudtam angolul, de azért próbáltam vele beszélgetni, felvetettem, hogy adhatna egy dobverőt, ha megoldható, azt mondta, semmi akadálya. A koncert végére teljesen elfelejtette, amikor utána kért még egy kávét, rákérdeztem, hogy mi a helyzet a dobverővel, amit ígért. Totál kiment a fejéből, de kirohant, én meg mentem utána, azt hittem, csak előkap valahonnan egyet. Nos, ki kellett pakoltatnia az egész trailert, mivel a dob volt legbelül. Kiszedett egy dobverőt és a merchből egy hosszú ujjas Morbid Angel pólót és mindkettőt nekem adta, ezek voltak a kollekcióm első darabjai, a pólót párom, Krisztián azóta is hordja.

2009 és 2010 környékén készült veled a legtöbb interjú. Mit gondolsz mi változott azóta a zenekarok ellátását illetően? Van valami, amit másképp kell csinálni?

Leginkább a rider-ek, a kérések változnak. Mostanában trendkövető igényekkel találkozok. Ki is írtam nem olyan rég a The Catering Queen oldalra, hogy míg pár éve az összes riderben szerepelt egy üveg Jack Daniel's, most e helyett a mandulatej és a mandula a divat. Érdekes, hogy szinte minden kívánságlistán szerepelt az elmúlt évben. (2013-ban-a szerk.)

Ez azt is jelenti, hogy egyre kevesebb az alkohol?

Azért azt nem mondanám, az alkohol az marad mindig. Csak a Jack Daniel's-hez valahogy társult egy rock 'n roll életérzés is, bár tényleg zenekara válogatja. Visszatérve ahhoz, mi változott még, csak a saját nézőpontomról tudok beszélni. Azt veszem észre, hogy sokkal jobban megbecsülik azt, amit itt kapnak. Igazából van pár jól működő catering cég külföldön is, de az alapján, amit a bandáktól hallok, a legtöbb országban még mindig nem kapnak annyi törődést, mint hazánkban.

Most 2014-ben még mindig ti biztosítjátok a nagyobb, külföldi fellépős rendezvények "ellátmányát", vagy már van más is a "piacon"?

Már jó pár éve, pontosabban négy éve nem csak mi. Akkoriban még ki tudtam jelenteni, hogy az ilyen jellegű rendezvények 80%-a hozzánk tartozik, ma már nem. Ez azért is lehet, mert új helyek alakultak, akik más-más céggel szerződtek, így nem adják ki külsősnek a vendéglátást sem. Nem a szakmámmal, szakmaiságommal volt probléma, ha nekem lenne egy saját klubom, én sem engednék be idegent. A lényeg, hogy emiatt kiszorultam bizonyos helyekről. Azt azért hozzá kell tennem, hogy irtó nagy érvágás volt ez nekem, elég nehéz volt talpra állnom, de bízom a jövőben...

Az már kiderült a korábbi interjúidból, miként zajlik egy-egy rendezvény lebonyolítása, arról még nem volt szó, hogyan juttok a megbízásokhoz.

Felkéréses alapon működik az egész, mégpedig a koncertszervezők részéről. Akik már ismernek, általában, hogyha a hely engedi, engem kérnek fel, hisz tudják, mire számíthatnak. Egyébként általában fix emberekkel dolgozom, de már külsős megkeresést is kaptam, ajánlás alapján, de legtöbbször az előbbi a rutin.

Mi volt a rekord az egy héten belül lebonyolításra kerülő rendezvények tekintetében?

Elég sokszor megesik, hogy ugyanazon a napon több koncert is van, ez már alapból rekordnak tekinthető. Egyszerre két helyen nem tudok ott lenni, ilyenkor általában a komplikáltabbat választom, egyébként úgy szervezem, hogy a kedvenceimmel legyek. Már kialakult egy olyan csapatom, akikkel teljesen jól együtt lehet működni és 100%-osan megbízok bennük. De szoktam úgy is csinálni, hogy vándorlok a két helyszín között, ilyenkor elindítom az egyiket és befejezem a másikat. Régebben előfordult, hogy volt egy két helyszínes esténk, ami már önmagában is eléggé megterhelő és a rá következő három napot még végigdolgoztuk, szerintem ez volt az eddigi legkeményebb, ezenkívül a fesztiválok is húzósak.

Ha már itt tartunk, miként emlékszel vissza az Azfeszt-re?

Rettenetesen sajnálom, hogy vége. Szerettem ott dolgozni, jó helyszín, korrekt szervező, csak pozitívumokat tudok elmondani róla. Az a meglátásom, hogy az emberek, amellett, hogy nincs pénzük, sajnos lusták megmozdulni, kimozdulni, elhinni, hogy ez tényleg óriási élmény, mert azért nem mindenki mondhatja el, hogy egy koncertet egy medencéből néz végig, a 45 fokban. Én iszonyatosan élveztem, bár nem sűrűn medencéztem, mert nem ez volt a dolgom, ettől függetlenül a körülmények is megfelelőek voltak, a zenekarok pedig remekül érezték magukat, sőt, kifejezetten tetszett nekik, hogy ott pancsikolhatnak. Szeretném, ha a fesztivált újra összehoznák, úgyhogy sok sikert kívánok a megvalósításhoz!

Általában hány fős csapattal dolgozol?

Aki állandó mellettem, az a párom, Gyémánt Krisztián, aki a Kill With Hate énekese, a háttérmunkákban rengeteget segít édesanyám, ő lelkileg, néha anyagilag is támogat. Ezenfelül rendszeresen velünk dolgozik Krisztián öccse és még páran, hogy kik, az változó, attól függ, ki, mikor ér rá. Már sokan kirepültek a kis "fészkemből", hisz fiatalon lehet rugalmasnak lenni, most hogy nem volt annyi buli, nem is tudtam nekik fix munkát adni, így nem csoda, hogy cserélődik a csapat. De mindenkivel nagyon meg vagyok elégedve. Fesztiválokon általában többen dolgozunk, ott be van vetve jóformán az egész család. Általában így megy, családdal, közeli barátokkal dolgozom együtt.

Mit vársz el tőlük?

Rengeteg mindent, szeretem, ha minden úgy van, ahogy elterveztem. Régen sokkal hisztisebb voltam, ma már rugalmasabban kezelem a dolgokat, de nem engedek sok mindenből, ebben elég szigorú vagyok, de ezt már tudják, így nem is szoktak problémázni rajta. Előfordul, hogy sokkal előbbre járok már gondolatban és még nem vették fel a ritmusomat, de persze lehet, csak rosszul kommunikálok és meg kell tanulnom, hogyan adjam elő nekik, mit, hogy képzeltem el, mert ebből szokott félreértés lenni, de ezeket meg tudjuk beszélni. Szerintem általában jó főnöknek tartanak, legalább is remélem, de őket kellene megkérdezni...

Ha magyar viszonylatban gondolkozunk, melyek azok a zenekarok, akiknek már jár az általatok biztosított magas színvonalú ellátás?

Akikkel én dolgoztam eddig az Ákos és a Tankcsapda. De egyébként vannak olyan promóterek, akik kifejezetten kérik, hogy legalább egy tálca szendvicset szolgáltassunk a külföldiek elé meghívott zenekaroknak, de ez Magyarországon nagyon-nagyon gyerekcipőben jár, Budapesten meg pláne. Mindenki költségkímélésre és egyebekre fogja, amit 100%-osan megértek a szervezők részéről, mert sejtem, mennyi pénzbe is kerül egy-egy koncert megszervezése, de bizonyos gesztusokat azért biztos, hogy értékelnének a magyarok is. Bár nem mindenki érdemli meg, és ebben is egyetértek azokkal, akik ilyesmit nem biztosítanak. Szóval ez bonyolult történet, az a baj, hogy elég sok honi csapat úgy képzeli, hogy ők már valakik. Úgy érzem, hogy rendkívül fontos lenne, hogy az alázat meglegyen minden egyes magyar zenészben, mert különben emberileg és hosszútávon ez nem fog működni, az is biztos, és nem is úgy fogunk emlékezni rájuk, ahogy szeretnék.

Én például azt rühellem a legjobban a magyar bandáknál, hogy nem köszönnek. Ha már ott vagy, látják az arcodat és ott szaladgálsz a folyosón, meglehet, hogy nem miattuk, akkor miért nem tudnak odaköszönni? Ez a nagy kérdés, pedig csupán az üdvözlésről beszélünk. Akkor gondold el, mi minden nem stimmelhet még egy koncert folyamán... Visszatérve azokra a zenekarokra, akiknek már riderük van, meg kell említenem a Depressziót is, akik pár évvel ezelőtt elhívtak a körútjukra, ahol én biztosítottam nekik naponta egy meleg fogást. Igazán jól éreztük magunkat, sok sikert, srácok A Dalhoz, drukkolunk! Igazából velük kapcsolatban is abszolút pozitív tapasztalataim vannak. A Tankcsapdát gyerekkorom óta imádtam, bár, mára már kinőttem ebből, sajnos, viszont hatalmas élmény volt, amikor tavaly lehetőséget kaptam arra, hogy életemben először megetessem őket. Abszolút pozitív volt a visszajelzés részükről is, sőt, megkértek, ha Budapesten járnak, én csináljam a cateringet nekik. Ezzel úgy, ahogy van, totál elégedett vagyok. Ákosról nem nyilatkoznék...

Visszakanyarodva a menüsorok és riderek világába. Ha jól tudom, a "kívánságlisták" nem határozzák meg pontosan, mi legyen az "étlapon". Mit készítesz szívesen?

Őszintén megmondom neked, semmit. Ha sok a meló és sokat kell főzni egy héten, próbálom költségkímélően és ízletesen elkészíteni a megadott ételeket. Viszont, ha van egy kis időm, és el tudok gondolkozni azon, milyen újdonságokat tudok kreálni, akkor általában ilyen "Szandra verziókban" megcsinálom ezeket, mert unom az átlagos kajákat. Sőt, otthon is úgy főzök, hogy próbálok arra ügyelni, hogy ne a hétköznapi fogások kerüljenek az asztalra. Persze az is jól esik, de édesanyámtól. Sajnos nem tudom betartani a recepteket, ebben nagyon szélsőséges vagyok, általában jó a végeredmény, de ez azért lehet, mert én nem ügyködtem szakácsként, csak magamnak. Talán ez a megfejtés. Ami viszont tényleg szórakoztat, az a vegán kaják kreatív fejlesztése. Szeretek azon agyalni, hogy érjem el, hogy minél jobban hasonlítsanak a húsételekhez.

A menüsoromban általában mindig szerepel valamilyen pörkölt alapú étel. Már kitapasztaltam mely köretek a leggyorsabban elkészíthetők, ezeknél is változatosságra törekszem. Próbálok mindenbe valami újdonságot csempészni, elsősorban azért, hogy én ne unjam meg. Előfordul, hogy nem is veszem figyelembe az adott formációt, hanem a saját megérzéseimre hallgatok. Ettől függetlenül, amikor először főzök valakire, legtöbbször utánanézek, mit szeret, mi a kedvence, bár a leírtak és a valóság nem mindig fedi egymást. Például egyszer teljesen kiakadtam, mert több órás munkámba került a fogás elkészítése, majd a végén kiderült, hogy a "főhős" nem is csípi.

Zakk Wylde-ról van szó. Ki akartam deríteni, mi a kedvence, meg is találtam a Mosh Potatoes cím könyvben, állítólag él-hal az olasz paradicsomos húsgombócért spagettivel. Megszereztem több helyről a receptet, elkészítettem, hogy lássa, milyen jól informált vagyok. Erre már érkezéskor közölte, hogy õ csirkemellet enne roston, mert diétázik, így nem is hajlandó mást enni. Mondtam, jó, rendben, sok sikert és megcsináltam neki a mellet. A többieknek szerencsére ízlett a paradicsomos húsgombóc, Zakk viszont említette, hogy nem is nagyon szereti. Ez eléggé szíven ütött, persze azóta is utána olvasok pár dolognak, de fenntartással kezelem az információkat!

Egyvalakinek készítettem még el a kedvencét. Egyszer, mikor etettem őket, elmondta a teljes receptet, így mire legközelebb jöttek, ezzel kedveskedtem neki, igazán értékelte. A jerk chickenrõl van szó, ami egy fahéjas, cukros, csípős, karamellizált csirke, aki pedig kapta, Mitch Lucker, a Suicide Silence énekese... Rettenetesen hiányzik egyébként, mert azzal a pár alkalommal, amikor találkozhattunk rengeteg mindent megosztott velem, amit nem is gondoltam volna, szimpatikus lehettem neki...

Nem csak rock-metal csapatok cateringjét vállaljátok, mik a tapasztalataid más műfajokban mozgó zenészeket illetõen?

Ugyanolyan emberek, mint mindenki más. Én azt mondom, hogy metal zenészek és pop csapatok közt is vannak hisztisek. Annyi a különbség, hogy ez esetben próbálom egy kis lazasággal leplezni, hogy nem ez az én világom, hisz sokszor megkérdezik, hogy tetszett a produkció. Csak annyit szoktam mondani, tök jó volt, de nem az én zeném. Meglepő módon vannak olyan csapatok, amiket kifejezetten élvezek.

Amit említenék, hogy más műfajoknál talán sokkal természetesebb és könnyebben kivitelezhető, hogy megkapják azt, amit kérnek. Hogy szemléltessem, sose felejtem el, hogy tavaly az Anthrax turnémenedzsere az első öt perc után odajött hozzám, átölelt és azt mondta: "Köszönöm, Szandra, hogy azt adtad, ami a riderben le volt írva." Kiderült, hogy egész nyáron én voltam az egyetlen, aki ezt teljesítette, pedig csak egy turmixról, egy gyümölcstálról, meg pár halas termékről volt szó, könyörgöm.

Ha már nem metalról beszélünk, ott volt Bob Marley fia, Julian Marley és csapata, akik kizárólag halételeket fogyasztottak. Lazacot életemben nem sokszor készítettem, de iszonyúan ízlett nekik, ők egyébként nem is igényelték a társaságom, a crew közvetlen volt, de ők másképp viselkedtek, kicsit távolságtartóak voltak, ez jelent némi különbséget, persze ebben a közegben is akadnak barátkozósak is, túl sok mindenben nem térnek el a stílusok.

Számos negatív és pozitív élményrõl beszámoltál már korábban. Mire érdemes emlékezned a tavalyi évbõl?

Negatív élményként lehetne említeni, hogy iszonyatos forróságban kell néha dolgozni, idén nyáron a Deep Purple-t kajáztattam, az a nap rettenetesen nehéz volt emiatt. A zenekarnak nem voltak extra igényei és nagyon kedvesek voltak. Sőt, Don Aiery billentyűs emlékezett is rám és megismert, mert őt már vendégül láttam az A38-on, így abszolút pozitívan zárult az este. Szerencsére nem túl gyakran fordul elõ másfajta negatívum. Részemről szomorú momentumnak tekinthetõ Mitch halála, aki, mint már említettem, valamiért közelebb került a szívemhez. Az utolsó, amit kiemelnék, az, hogy néha milyen ramaty állapotban hagyták ott az öltözőket egyes bandák. Meglepő, milyen sokszor előfordult ez tavaly. Lehet, kicsit zizik voltak, vagy nem tudom.

Számtalan pozitív dolog történt. Mindegyik koncerten volt egy-egy apróság, ami megmozgatott. Sokkal több a pozitívum egyébként, mert minden képes friss élményt adni. Sokszor kapok ajándékokat, csak úgy, azoktól a zenészektől, akik idejönnek. Megköszönik az ellátást, megtapsolnak. Pedig hidd el, tényleg csak egy cateringes vagyok. Nem tavaly történt, de érdekes eset. Az Amon Amarth-ot sokszor kajáztattam már, egyikük picit másként állt a dolgokhoz és megváltozott a szememben az évek folyamán, ahogy egyre nagyobbak lettek, de ez az én privát véleményem. Egy fesztiválon történt, hogy kértek a riderben egy bort, amit én egy magyarral helyettesítettem, nem ízlett neki, de azt nem tudta megmondani, pontosan mit szeretne. Ünnep volt, minden zárva, mégis szereztünk neki két fajta drága bort, én magam vittem be hozzá, de látszott, hogy húzza a száját. Nehéz nap volt, úgyhogy a zenekar többi tagja is látta rajtam, hogy nincs annyi türelmem, mint általában, ott is hagytam őt a három üveg borával, elvonultam bömbölni, mert eléggé kiakasztott a sztori.

Lement a koncert, utána buliztunk egyet, már nem volt gond, de nem tudtam elfelejteni az esetet. Amikor legutoljára a Club 202-ben jártak, nem én etettem őket, de ott lehettem. Felhívtak a backstage-be és ketten is úgy indítottak, hogy ne haragudjak, azért, ahogy a társuk viselkedett, két évvel korábban. Odahívták őt is, és elmagyarázták neki, miért volt hülye. Egyébként ő volt az első, akit aznap este elcsíptem és úgy ölelgetett, mintha az egyik családtagját látná viszont. Szóval változnak az emberek, és ezt az egész csapat érzi, az alapján, hogy milyen impulzusokat kapnak kívülről. A zenekarok próbálják visszahúzni azt, akivel kicsit elszalad a ló, és a nevében is elnézést kérnek, ha messzire ment. Ezért is érdemes csinálni.

Hangsúlyozod, hogy a feladatod nem merül ki a vendéglátásban, miért tartod fontosnak, hogy a zenészek lelkével is törődj?

Elõször is ez belőlem ered, kicsit anyáskodó típus vagyok. Párom mindig mondja, hogy ne bízzak már meg akárkiben, meg ne legyek ennyire barátságos, mert nem mindenki érdemli meg. De én ilyen vagyok, a génjeimben van, nem tudok rajta változtatni, próbáltam, nem ment, csak egy bizonyos szintig. Mindenesetre már nem vagyok annyira "odafutós" típus. Sokkal jobban célt tudok érni olyan helyzetekben, amikor nézeteltérés adódik, nem feltétlenül velem. Egy nap alatt nagyon sok olyan apró konfliktus akad, zenekar és hely közt, zenekar és promóter közt, zenekar és én köztem, akár zenekar és rajongó közt, amiket nagyon jól lehet orvosolni azzal, ha megbíznak benned, már pár perc után is. Ez már alapot ad ahhoz, hogy ha bármi kérdés van, bizalommal forduljanak hozzád. Hogyha ez megvan, akkor te is bízni fogsz bennük. Vannak, akikkel könnyebb, mert abszolút nyitottak és pár órás ismeretség után úgy viselkedünk, mintha ezer éves cimborák lennénk, de vannak, akikkel már vagy ötvenszer találkoztam, de még mindig tartják a távolságot. Ez természetes, hisz különböző országokból, népcsoportokból származnak, nem mindenki annyira közvetlen típus, viszont tudják, hogy ki vagyok, tisztelik a munkámat, én is az övéket, nem zavarjuk egymás köreit. Vannak, akik még ha nem is járnak erre, rám írnak, mi újság. A legelső szempont pedig az, hogy ha jól érzi nálunk magát egy zenész, akkor jobban teljesít a színpadon is, ami a közönségnek is ideális és szívesen jön majd vissza később is. Sokkal jobb, mintha anyázva menne fel a színpadra, mert valami nem stimmelt és emiatt ad szar koncertet.

Még él a sztereotípia, hogy a zenész a legproblémásabb. Valóban így lenne?

A crew-ban is legalább annyi a problémás, sőt, néha azt hiszik, hogy hatalmasabb sztárok, mint akivel érkeznek. Ezzel nem igazán lehet mit kezdeni, de szerencsére tényleg nagyon-nagyon kevés az ilyen eset. A legtöbbeknek maximum rossz kedve volt, vagy épp olyan betegsége, amit nem közöltek előre, és amikor kezet akartál fogni vele, mondta, hogy nem lehet. Ez elsőre sértőnek tűnhet, de amikor már tudod, mi miért van, megérted. Meg azért ne felejtsük el, hogy a crew tagok egy-egy napja abból áll, hogy egy csomót utaznak, mikor megérkeznek az adott helyszínre, talán annyi idejük van, hogy WC-re elmenjenek, lefürödjenek, elintézzék ügyes-bajos dolgaikat, kb. fél órában. Közben kajálnak, nem tudnak normálisan leülni, megnézni az e-mailjeiket, vagy bármit, mert nekik ugye el kell kezdeniük készülődni, tehát kb. egy órában kell minden személyes dolgukat elintézni, az érkezéstől számítva. Ezután bepakolnak, felépítik a színpadot, meg sem állnak a vacsoráig, azzal együtt kb. két órájuk van pihenni, majd kezdődik a show. A végén lepakolnak mindent és irány a következő állomás... Irtó stresszes az életük, de persze van köztük alapjáraton seggfej is, vagy valamilyen egészségügyi gonddal küzdő, ami az alkoholizmustól kezdve lehet bármi, ami kihat rám is sajnos. Hangsúlyozom, ez tényleg ritka, de előfordul.

Mivel lehet téged igazán kihozni a sodrodból?

Talán az értelmetlen kötözködéssel, de ha valamit nem teljesítek és jogos a kritika, azt aláírom. Bár ez nehéz kérdés, mivel, eddig csak egyszer-kétszer történt ilyesmi, de az is inkább a fáradtság miatt. Általában elég magas a tűrőképességem, inkább magamban, vagy a közeli ismerősöknek puffogok, próbálom elkerülni, hogy valaki rám szálljon. Tényleg nem könnyű válaszolni... Sok kis apróság kiakaszt, de az is a kimerültségtől függ, hogy reagálok. Megpróbálok mindenkivel normálisan ellenni. Néha a pofátlanság felhúz, de azért tudom kezelni. Ahhoz, hogy igazán kiboruljak, szélsőséges szituáció kell. Megpróbálok mindent már azelőtt megoldani, mielőtt elvesztem a fejem. Úgyhogy szerencsére nincs ilyen.

Sokat hallhattunk már a vendégkönyvedről, feltételezem többen is pályáznak rá. Én is szívesen átnyálaznám, szó szerint. Emellett a fotógyűjteményed is jelentős. Minden zenésszel, akit eddig megismertél sikerült közös képet készíteni?

Sajnos nem. Ott van például Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), vele nem sikerült összehozni. De én voltam a nyuszi, mert igazából három lehetőségem is lett volna, és mindet elszalasztottam. Vele nagyon szerettem volna közös fotót, de valahogy úgy éreztem, hogy ő nem az a "gyere, Szandra, fotózkodjunk együtt" típus. Őszintén, néha lusta is vagyok. Bevallom, hogyha nem annyira jó fejek, akkor nem szívesen megyek oda, hogy, "na, gyertek, azért csináljunk egy képet..." Persze mindenkivel megpróbálok fényképezkedni, és valóban jelentős a gyűjtemény. Most elég nagy káosz is van a képek között, próbálom kitalálni, miként csoportosítsam őket. Sajnos a fotókon szereplők közül már többen meghaltak, akikhez igazán kellemes élmények kötnek, nem felejtem el őket. Mindannyijukról tudnék olyan sztorit, ami velem kapcsolatos.

Emellett ott a vendégkönyv is. Az első évben egyébként nem is volt, Havancsák Gyula haverom találta ki. Igazából ő kérdezett rá, hogy miért nem csinálok egyet, mikor tök jó ötlet. Először nem is érdekelt annyira a dolog, de aztán rájöttem, hogy lenne létjogosultsága. Gyula csinálta az első papírjaimat, ki is nyomtatta nekem. Akkor még annyira nem értettem a számítógépes világot, most már azért egyre jobban. Ő megszerkesztette nekem, felrakta a logót, később az ismerősök csinálták meg az oldalakat, amíg nem volt saját számítógépem, meg nyomtatóm, utána már én magamnak. De ezt is elhanyagoltam párszor, úgyhogy elnézést kérek azoktól, akiket még nem nyomtattam ki, vagy nem készült el a logójuk, különféle okokból.

Hány oldalnál tartasz?

Hú, iszonyatos mennyiségnél, kb. 600 oldal van beszkennelve, de ez még csak a fele. Rengeteg olyan emléket ölel föl, ami konkrét szituációra reflektál, számtalan aranyos rajzot, poénos bejegyzést tartalmaz. Egyetlen egy negatív hozzászólás van a könyvemben, de bevallom nőiesen, hogy amit az illető negatívumként beírt, kipipálgattam, mivel minden megvolt. Nem is baj, kell ilyen is, biztos rossz napja volt.

Még mindig szeretnéd megírni-kiadni a tapasztalataidat?

Tervben van, legalább is a fejemben. Nekem kell bizonyos ihlet, mint minden másra is, és szeretném, ha együttműködhetnék valakivel, aki ezt leírja. Nem azért, mert lusta lennék hozzá, hanem, ha ketten csinálnánk, a külső szemlélő jobban átlátná, mi igazán érdekfeszítő, bár azt hiszem, én is érdekessé tehetem, de egy plusz ember jelenléte mindenképpen támogató lenne. Arról nem is beszélve, hogy k*rva nehéz emlékezni. Próbálok diktafonozni, de mindent szépen lassan elhagytam.

Sok sztorit elfelejtettem, rengeteg impulzus ér, amikor például három-négy napot dolgozunk egy huzamban, nem biztos, hogy emlékszem, mi volt az elsőn, lehet, öregszem. Diktafonos felvételből is van 20-30, de ezek pont olyan koncertek, amikor igazából semmi érdemleges nem történt, ettől függetlenül az emlékezésben segít. Remélem, hogy egyszer sikerül kiadni a könyvet. Nem szeretnék beképzeltnek tűnni, de számomra ezek a dolgok érdekesek és visszanézve a korábbi interjúim olvasottságát, mások szerint is, a pletyka mindig izgalmas. Bár én nem tartom magam pletykásnak, viszont, ha kérdeznek, válaszolok bizonyos helyzetekben, ameddig úgy engedi a történet.

Korábban említetted, hogy magyarul nem szeretnéd megjelentetni. Kár lenne érte, mert számunkra is rengeteg tanulság rejlene benne.

Lehet, hogy már meggondoltam magam ezzel kapcsolatban, a lényeg, hogy tényleg szükségem lenne egy olyan külső támogatóra, aki b*sztat emiatt és leírja a történeteim. Ez iszonyú nagy feladat, a megírása legalább egy évet igénybe venne, mert számos részletnek, momentumnak utána kell járni, hisz elfelejtek egyes részleteket és nem szeretnék hiteltelennek tűnni. Fel kell vennem a kapcsolatot azokkal az emberekkel, akikkel együtt dolgoztam, hátha emlékeznek arra, hogy mi történt az adott szituban pontosan.

Remélem, hogy lesz belőle valami. Picit más téma, milyen ereklyékkel sikerült gazdagítani, az igen jelentős kollekciótokat?

Elég sok mindennel! Rengeteg pengetőt kaptam, ez egy újabb gyűjtési folyamatot eredményezett, a dobverő gyűjteményem is bővült, de egyébként nem kategorizálom a cuccokat, "ömlesztős" típus vagyok. Viszont az idei karácsonyfámat úgy díszítettem fel, hogy az emlékeket, amik tavaly összegyűltek, felakasztgattam a fára. Különböző stage pass-okból, meg mindenféléből csináltam díszeket, ez volt az egész évem összefoglalója. Tavaly kaptam egy olyan ajándékot, ami nagyon megérintett és a mai napig őrzöm. Az Eyehategod zenekarral elmentünk várost nézni, megkértek, hogy menjek már el velük, mert Jimmy Bower gitáros emlékezett, hogy amikor itt voltak a Down-al, elvittem őt a párjával kicsit körbenézni.

Bejött velem a városba a dobos, az énekes, két crew tag, a gitáros és a turnémenedzser csaj, akivel azóta is jóban vagyunk. Róla közben kiderült, hogy világsztárok személyi asszisztense volt eddig, csak imádja ezt a műfajt és így keveredett ide. Na, a lényeg, hogy bementünk a városba, az egyik tag felesége magyar származású és meg akarta lepni, úgyhogy bevittem őket egy ajándékboltba, ott felvásárolták szinte az egész üzletet, még kedvezményt is szereztem nekik, szóval tök jól érezték magukat. Mikor mentünk visszafelé, kaptam tőle egy karkötőt, amit azóta őrzök. Totál pozitívan telt az egész nap, viszont két hétre rá jött a hír, hogy meghalt Joe LaCaze dobos. Teljesen lesújtott a dolog, látod, ennyit ér egy élet... Örülök, hogy ismerhettem, és annak is, hogy ha csak pár órát is, de vele tölthettem az életéből, örömet okozhattam neki, kapott tőlem egy fagyit. Emiatt pláne nem fogom elfelejteni ezt a napot.

Mostanában hiányolom a pentagramos köténykédet. Szoktad még hordani?

Szoktam, de visszahallottam, hogy egyes promótereim szerint nem mindegyik zenekarnál megfelelő viselet a pentagram, az ő kérésüknek eleget téve, nem mindig hordom, nem is mindig van rá szükségem, mert elég hosszú, beleakadok, de ez már az én hülyeségem. Néha el is felejtem, vagy kikészítem, de otthon hagyom.

Ez afféle kabala? Hogy tettél szert rá?

Igazából nekem iszonyatosan tetszenek ezek a jelképek. Az egyik privát logóm is hasonló, ebből lesz majd az új kötényem, amit most már két éve tervezek, de persze még nem készült el, de majd idővel. Nem mindenben vagyok azért ennyire lassú, csak vannak olyan dolgok, amik kiszorulnak a teendők közül. Azt viszont tudni kell, hogy ebből a kötényből három darab van a világon. Rajtam kívül van még Phil Anselmo-nak és Dez Fafarának, mindkettőjüknek én adtam. Amikor itt járt a Down, nálam volt a kötény, mert előtte pár héttel lett volna egy Dimmu Borgir koncert, ahol játszott volna Simen (I.C.S.Vortex), aki a korábbi koncertjükkor imádta a kötényemet. Nagyon szeretem a zenéjét, hatalmas Arcturus fan vagyok. Szóval, megígértem, hogy csináltatok neki egy ilyen kötényt, hozzáteszem, hogy azóta sem találkoztunk, de majd most a Borknagar-on talán. Addigra csak sikerül elkészítenem az új kötényt is, így ő lesz a negyedik, aki hordhatja.

Visszatérve Philre, nem terveztem el előre, hogy odaajándékozom neki a kötényt, de roppant közvetlen volt. Imádtam anno a Panterát, õt is nagyon megkedveltem már az első pár perc alatt. Egész nap ott ugrált, teljesen fel volt pörögve. Mondtam, hogy na, akkor megkapod a kötényt. Megnézte mi van rajta, majd odaadta a barátnőjének, de annyira fellelkesült, hogy elkezdte mutogatni a tetoválásait és elmesélte, hogy az úszómedencéjében van egy vörössel kivilágított pentagram, ami hasonló stílusban készült, persze nincs rajta a Hungarian Black Metal Club felirat.

Fafara pedig azért kapta meg, mert ő is imádta a kötényt, akárhányszor jöttek, mindig elmondta, hogy szeretne ilyet. Végül egy jó barátja, aki a turnémenedzserük is volt, azt hiszem, "rendelte meg" neki, ha úgy vesszük. Persze nem pénzért adtam. Kimentünk Linzbe, a Behemoth, Devildriver koncertre és ott megajándékoztam a köténnyel, nagyon örült neki. Egyébként korábban, amikor a PeCsában léptek fel, rosszkedvű volt, egész nap csak járkált, aztán elkezdett hosszan telefonálni valakivel, jártam arra többször is, egyre csak telefonált, aztán egyszer csak odakiáltott nekem, hogy, hé, Szandra, üdvözöl a Lamb Of God. Totál meglepõdtem, mivel a Lamb of Goddal eddig összesen egyszer, a Metalfesten találkoztam, csak pár órát beszélgettünk, akkor egyszer is jártak ugye Magyarországon, és nem felejtettek el. Üdvözöltek, pedig már hány éve volt. Azért az k*rva jó, hogy amikor Fafara Budapestet emlegette, rögtön én jutottam eszükbe, és tudták a nevemet!

Ha már itt tartunk, mi jelentette munkád során a legnagyobb elismerést?

Az igazság az, hogy jó pár volt. Számomra minden elismerés hatalmas, nem tudnék egyet kiemelni. Megesett, hogy felhívtak a színpadra a koncert közepén és megköszönték a munkámat, voltak, akik dalt küldtek nekem, ez mind-mind rengeteget jelent, főleg, ha a kedvenc zenekaromról van szó, iszonyatosan pozitív. Egy finn zenekar, a hazautazás előtt már nem akart vesződni semmivel, így a maradék merchüket egy az egyben nekem ajándékozták, ami egy full doboznyi pólót, bakelitet és CD-t jelentett. Egyszer egy madársípot ajándékoztam az egyik bandának, amit használtak is a koncerten. Úgy alakult, hogy egy majálison szereztem pár műanyag kardot, amit a Lordi beépített a díszletbe, dob dekorációként.

Amit biztos soha nem felejtek el, - vannak, akik szerint egyben megalázó is, én nem hinném - eddig kétszer fordult elő. Először a Jon Oliva's Pain-nél, ők a program leges-legvégén, mielőtt indultak, odahívtak magukhoz és ajándékoztak nekem egy zenekari sapkát, benne nem kis összegnyi euróval, amit ők szedtek nekem össze. A második alkalommal pedig a Fear Factory és a Devin Townsend Project gyűjtött nekem borravalót, a Fear Factory-tól még a turné passzukat is megkaptam, pedig még pár állomás hátra volt. Számos alkalommal kapok pólókat. Az Immolation egy külföldi újságnak adott interjújában megemlített, mint a világ legjobb catering szolgáltatóját. Sokan vezetnek turnénaplót, tök jól esik, ha ott is megemlítenek. Amikor nem voltam toppon lelkileg, egy olyan ember ajánlotta fel a támogatását, aki nem kis név, mert segíteni szeretett volna. Szóval roppant sokan pozitívan állnak hozzám. Külön kérni nem szoktam egyébként semmit. Szerintem a világ úgy működik, ha adsz, kapsz. De persze az is előfordult, hogy már rendesen untam, hogy annyiszor megköszönték az ellátást, pedig eltérő idõpontokban más-más jött oda hozzám ezzel.

Rengeteg olyan emberrel találkozom, aki arra panaszkodik, hogy kevés a minőségi koncert és turné, ami hazánkat is érinti. Mit gondolsz, mi ennek az oka?

Nagyon sok minden. Az egyik, hogy mindenki ízlésének senki sem tud megfelelni. Annak pedig, hogy egy zenekar miért nem jön Magyarországra, megint csak számos oka lehet. Az első, hogy nem akar, különböző elvek miatt, ott van például a Six Feet Under. De igen ritka, hogy valaki azért nem jön, mert valami baja van a magyarsággal, bár, érdemes ezen is elgondolkozni. Ami szerintem a fő ok, hogy az itteni promóterek egyszerűen nem tudnak annyi pénzt fizetni, amennyiért az adott formáció idejönne. Hogy ez miért van? Azért mert sokan nem tudják megfizetni a jegyárat, vagy egyszerűen csak lusták, arra hogy elmenjenek és támogassák a zenekart, illetve a promótert, hogy a jövőben más bandát is le tudjon szervezni. Általában tényleg az anyagiak határoznak meg egy-egy ilyen produkciót, mert nem úgy kell elképzelni, hogy eljönnek, játszanak, megkapják a gázsit és kész.

A háttérmunkákat tekintve igen sok egyéb igény felmerül. A rider-t is csak a szerződés megkötése után küldik, ilyenkor szembesül az ember a tényleges költségekkel. Persze ekkor még nem késő variálni, végiggondolni, mit képes biztosítani egy promóter és mit nem. De iszonyatosan sok múlik ezen, arról nem is beszélve, hogy bérelni kell egy alkalmas helyet, ki kell fizetni a hang- és fénytechnikát, több esetben szállást kell keresni, stb. Így mérlegelni kell, a jegyár, fedezi-e a kiadásokat, és ha még el sem jönnek az emberek, óriásit tud bukni a szervező. A harmadik ok pedig, hogy elõfordul, hogy ugyanarra a dátumra több országból is "pályáznak", ha például választani lehet egy németországi tripla gázsis, vagy egy magyarországi szimpla gázsis fellépés közt, nem kérdés, hol lesz a buli... Persze én azt látom, hogy minden zenekarnak célja, hogy eljusson hozzánk is, de nem mindegy, milyen körülmények mellett, ezért senkit nem lehet hibáztatni.

Azt veszem észre, hogy az emberek olykor buták is ehhez, mert könnyű vagdalkozni, meg sóhajtozni, hogy milyen jó lenne, ha xy eljönne, aztán, ha ez megvalósul, nincsenek ott a koncerten. Akkor azért én is szívesen visszakérdeznék, hogy, na és miért nem jöttetek el? Viszont vannak, akik tényleg minden koncertre elmennek, ha tehetik. Sajnos a legfőbb indok sokszor a pénz. A mai magyar ember nem tudja megengedni magának, hogy havonta, vagy kéthavonta megjelenjen minden nagyobb megmozduláson. Azzal viszont egyáltalán nem értek egyet, hogy nincs elég koncert Magyarországon, mert tudom hány külföldi fellépős koncert van, arról nem is beszélve, hogy mennyi magyar. Igenis van pár honi tehetség, akiket igazán meg lehet nézni és nem a kifogásokat sorolni. Összegezve, sajnos az emberek lusták, ha pedig pozitívabban akarom nézni, akkor az anyagiak szabnak gátat. Arról nem is beszélve, hogy mennyire visszaesett a zenekari merch árusítása az egyes bulikon. Nyilvánvaló, hogy ez egy választási lehetőség, de azt veszem észre, hogy sokszor nincs igény magára az élőzenére sem.

Sajnos leginkább a magyar bandákkal szemben jellemző az érdektelenség, arra hivatkozván, hogy semmi újat, egyedit nem mutatnak. Ezzel szemben a tribute zenekarok olyan szinten felkapottak, mint még soha. Egyszerűen nem értem, mi ebben a logika.

Biztos vannak jó tribute zenekarok, én nem támogatom ezt. Persze volt már, hogy belefutottam, belehallgattam, de az, hogy egy tribute fesztiválért fizessek, elképzelhetetlen. Ez most egy rettentően trendi dolog itthon. Ha körbenézünk, külföldön annyira nem jellemző, ott már kinőttek ebből az emberek. A lényeg, hogy jobban értékelem, ha valaki saját zenét játszik. A feldolgozásokkal nincs baj, ha szeretik és ebből inspirálódnak, ez valóban tiszteletadás, de az, hogy valaki ilyesmire épít tribute zenekart és más sikereiből akar hasznot húzni, ráadásul rosszul is csinálja, érthetetlen számomra. Ha már ilyesmibe kezd az ember, akkor az a minimum, hogy profi legyen. Elvileg egy feldolgozás zenekar arról szól, hogy a saját ízlésének megfelelően alakítja át példaképe dalait, az még be is jön. Ha valaki saját zenekar mellett csinál tribute bandát, azt még elfogadom, mert tudok mihez viszonyítani, de azoknál, akik csak ebben a formában jelennek meg, hogy beszéljünk saját stílusról?!

Na így a vége felé "vidámkodjunk" egy kicsit. Mik azok a 2014-es események, amiket nagyon vártok?

Igencsak vártam az első Death By Metal fesztivált, ahol páromék is játszottak, a Kill With Hate-tel. Ez végre egy olyan esemény, ami úgy érzem, egy kicsit az underground összefogásáról is szólt. Nagyon várom a Borknagar-t is, ami szintén egy elég érdekes koncert lesz és persze még rengeteg bulit, amiről már vannak információim, de még nem publikusak. Fesztiválok közül a Fezen-t, a Budapest Parkban először megrendezésre kerülő Aerodrome fesztivált említeném, készülünk Bécsbe, a Cradle Of Filth és a Behemoth közös bulijára. Abban biztos vagyok, hogy ők például azért nem jöttek Magyarországra, mert rendkívül drága lett volna a két zenekar meg a "körítés" így, együtt, amit sajnos nem nagyon tudtak volna kitermelni. De különben mindent várok, mert volt olyan tapasztalatom már régebben is, hogy valakit a fellépése alkalmával fedeztem fel magamnak, persze az is előfordult már, hogy lemezen imádtam, élőben viszont csalódtam.

Na most már tényleg az utolsó kérdések egyike, mi az ami motivál, ösztönöz arra, hogy folytasd, amit csinálsz?

Az emberi kapcsolatok, nekem ez ad erőt a folytatáshoz. Nem az elismerés, nem a siker, hanem azok az emberek, akiket az elmúlt évek alatt megismertem, annyira jó őket viszontlátni, sokszor szavak nélkül is érzem, hogy tisztában vannak azzal, hogy ott vagyok és számíthatnak rám, még akkor is, ha nincs haveri viszony. Jó érzés tudni, hogy ott vannak, mire van szükségük, hisz az együtt töltött pár óra alatt a szokásaikat is fel kell mérnem. Vannak, akik elzárkóznak, de én megértem, hogy akkor éppen erre van szükségük. Persze viszontlátáskor sokszor érnek meglepetések, érdekes látni, mennyire másként viselkednek az emberek egy-egy alkalommal.

Szóval tényleg az emberi kapcsolatok éltetnek, ha nem áll módomban rájuk főzni valamilyen okból, akkor is mindig megjelenek a bulijukon, ezzel támogatom őket. Így van egy fix pont, akiről tudják, hogy ott van. Sokszor kikérik a véleményemet a koncertek után, olyankor tényleg őszinte vagyok, néha lehet, hogy nem tetszik nekik, amit hallanak, de igyekszem senkit sem megbántani, de ha megkérdeznek, válaszolok. Általában, ha nagyon nem tetszik a produkció, azt mondom, tök jó volt, de nem az én zeném. Hisz én sem szerethetek mindent.

Nos, én tényleg végeztem, köszönöm nagyon, a végszó viszont a Tiéd.

Otherwise – Interview with The Catering Queen Alexandra Szalai

I would like to introduce a nice young lady to you. Maybe you have already met her, because she is present at almost every concert. Generally, she and her team work at the backstage to provide a really high level of service for every foreign band, "the big ones", who come to Hungary from all over the world. While we were talking about her carrier, musicians, music and concerts, I was thinking about the Hungarian scene. Everything would be different if the underground community had more people like her. Do not be envious of her! Rather adopt her selflessness and her extra strong resolve, because this girl is extraordinary, the Bors (one of the well-read tabloids of Hungary) has already said that. To be honest, it always makes me highly proud, if my favourite foreign musicians start to think about Szandra when hearing from Budapest...

(I really appreciate the kind help of Szandra's friend Anita Sera, for the excellent translation of the whole interview. Thanks a lot, Anita!)

It's great to see you, Szandra! As I'm pretty nostalgic, what else would we begin with? You have been in the industry for more than 15 years now, and you fed Morbid Angel on your first fully owned party. Can you remember what was served to them?

I sure don't remember the food anymore, it must have been some kind of stew. But I remember the things that happened that day very well. I'll never forget the moment when drummer Peter Sandoval popped in. Imagine someone looking like a "hobo", wearing torn jeans and shirt, his boots untied, his hair a mess. Of course he asked for a coffee at once, which was not a problem at all, but he kept on drinking coffee all the time, and I believe he drank like 2 liters of coffee during the day. I could hardly speak English back then, yet I tried to have a chat with him nonetheless, and I suggested he could give me a drumstick if that's ok with him, and he said, of course he would. By the end of the concert he totally forgot about it, and when he asked for a coffee afterwards, I reminded him of his promise. He completely forgot about it, but he bolted out, me following him, and I was sure he would just grab a drumstick from somewhere. Well, ha had to have the trailer unpacked, as the drums were packed inmost. He found a drumstick and a long-sleeved Morbid Angel shirt from the merchandise and he gave them both to me. These are the first items of my collection, and my fiance Krisztián has been using the shirt ever since.

You gave the first interviews around 2009-2010. What do you think, has changed the catering since? Is there anything that you need to do differently?

It's the requests that change the most. Nowadays I encounter demands that reflect the new trends. I posted this on my page The Catering Queen, that as a couple of years ago, every request had a bottle of Jack Daniel's in it, by now it kind of has been replaced by almond milk and almonds. It was interesting to see it on nearly every list from the past year.

Does this mean that there's less alcohol on the lists?

Well, I would not say that, alcohol is a must. It's just that Jack Daniel's somehow represents a rock'n roll feeling, but it depends on the band, really. Back on topic, I can only tell you about my own point of view. I have noticed that they appreciate more what is provided to them. There are some active catering agencies abroad as well, but based on what I hear from the bands, they are still not pampered as much as in Hungary.

In 2014, is it still you who provide the "supplies" for the shows featuring big names from abroad, or is there someone else on the market as well?

It's been a couple of years, four years to be exact, since it is not only us. Back then I could safely say that 80% of the big shows like these are taken care of by us, but not today. This could be a result of the fact that there are new places which are in contract with different agencies, so they do not trust an outsider company with the catering either. It's not my profession or professionalism that is the problem, if I had my own venue, I would not let a stranger do these things either. Bottom line is, that because if this I am now cut out from certain places. I must admint this was a huge loss for me, it was very hard to get back on my feet again, but I am positive about the future...

We know from previous interviews how these events are organized, but you have not revealed yet how you are commissioned to these.

It runs on a bidding basis, done by the concert managers. People who already know me usually, if the venue also allows, ask me to do it, because they know what they can expect from me. I work with the same people most of the time, but I have been sought by others as well based on commendation, but it is the first case that is the routine most of the time.

What has been your record so far for the number of events served in one week?

It happens many times that there are multiple concerts on the same day, managing these is a record in its own right already. I cannot be in two places at the same time, so I usually go with the more complicated one, and I organize my day to be able to be with my favorites. I have a team with whom I can work with very well and I trust them to the max. At times I may commute between two places, in such cases I start at the first event and finish at the other. There was one time when we had two places to serve in one night, and then we were working the following three days as well, I think that was the most demanding job so far. Festivals are very tense as well.

Talking about festivals, how do you remember Azfest?

I am terribly sorry that it is gone. I liked to work there, the location was good, the manager was fair, I can only say positive things about it. As I see it, people not only have little money, but they are also too lazy to actually do anything, go out, believe that this is indeed a great experience, because not everybody can boast that they watched a concert from an outside pool, in 45 degrees celsius. I totally enjoyed the festival, although I was not often in the pool, because it was not my job, but still, the circumstances were just right, the bands had a great time, and they loved the pool as well. I would love to see this festival up again, so I wish good luck to the organizers!

In general, how big is your team?

The people who are always with me are my fiance, Krisztián Gyémánt, who is also the singer of Kill With Hate, and my mother helps a lot with the work in the background. She gives me emotional, and at times, financial support as well. Krisztián's brother works with us on a regular basis, and a couple more people who change from time to time, depeneding on when they are available. Many people have left my little "nest" already, because you can be flexible when you are young, and as there have been not so many shows, I could not provide them with regular income, so it is no surprise that the staff changes. Still, I am satisfied with everyone. We work with more people on festivals, nearly the whole family is in charge. It is like that most of the time, I work with family and close friends.

What do you expect from your team?

A lot. I like to have things as I planned. I was a lot more picky in the past, and although I am more flexible nowadays, I don't allow many things to change, I am pretty rigorous in this respect, but they already know it, so there are no conflicts between us because of this. It happens that I am way more ahead in my head and they have not yet picked up my pulse, but it can be my communication style as well, so I have to learn how to instruct them about my plans. At times there are misunderstandings because of it, but we can talk them over. I believe they think I am a good boss most of the time, or at least I hope they do, but you should ask them really.

If we talk about Hungary, which are the bands who are entitled for the high quality catering you provide?

I have worked with Ákos and Tankcsapda so far. There are some promoters who request that we serve at least a couple of sandwiches for the bands who play before the main band, but this is really not common yet in Hungary, especially in Budapest. They blame it on the budget and things like that, which I completely understand, because I have an idea about how much it can cost to organize a concert, but I am sure that Hungarian bands would appreciate these small gestures as well. Although it is true that not everyone deserves these, and I can agree with those who do not provide such services too. All in all, this is a complicated story, and trouble is that many Hungarian bands think they are already someone. I feel it would be very important for these people to be more humble, because otherwise things will not work out for them and they will not be remembered the way they would like to be. I particularly hate it that Hungarian bands do not greet you when you meet them. When you are there, they see your face, running up and down the corridors, even if not because of them, why is it so hard to say hello? This is the big question, altough we are only talking about a simple greeting. Think about it what else can go wrong during a concert...

Back to the bands who already have a rider, I have to mention Depresszió, who invited me for their tour a couple of years ago, where I provided them with one hot meal a day. We had a nice time together, good luck with A Dal (one of the many Hungary's got Talent-kinds of shows), we support you! I have positive experience with them, really. I have loved Tankcsapda since I was little, and although I have outgrown them by now, it was a huge thing when I got the chance to cook for them for the first time in my life last year. The feedback was absolutely positive, and they even asked me to provide the catering for them next time they play in Budapest. I am completely satisfied with this, as it is. I would rather not say anything about Ákos...

Let's go back to menus and riders. As far as I know, "wishlists" do not tell you exactly what has to be on the "menu". What is it that you like to cook?

To be honest, nothing. When there is much work and I have to cook a lot during the week, I try to cook budget-friendly and tasty food. On the other hand, when I have time to think about something new that I could create, then I usually make the "Szandra version", because I am bored by the usual stuff. What's more, I try to pay attention not to serve the everyday food all the time, even at home. Of course that feels good too, but from my mother. Unfortunately I cannot keep to the recipes, I am very far-out in this respect, but the results are good. This might be because I have never worked as a chef, only for myself. Maybe this is the key. What I find most joyful is the creative improvement of vegan foods. I like to exercise my mind over ways to get them be like meat as much as possible.

There is always some kind of stew on the menu. I know now which side dishes are the fastest to make, so I try to be versatile in this respect as well. I try to modify everything a little bit, first of all so that I do not get bored by it. At times I don't even take into account the instructions, I just go by my instincts. Nonetheless, when I first cook for somebody, I look up the foods they like, what is their favourite, but sometimes this information is not very accurate. I was once totally upset because it took me hours to make the dish, and then it turned out that the hero of the story does not even like it.

It was Zakk Wylde. I wanted to find out what his favourite was, and I even found it in the book Mosh Potatoes, where it said that he was totally mad about italian meatballs in tomato sauce with spaghetti. I collected the recipe from different sources, and cooked it for him to see how well-informed I was. Then, already upon arrival he told us he wanted grilled chicken breast because he was on a diet and he was not even willing to eat anyhing else. I wished him good luck and cooked the chicken for him. Fortunately the others liked the meatballs, but Zakk mentioned that he does not even like them. This struck me quite a bit, but of course I post myself up on these things ever since, but I am more cautious. I made his favourite for one more person. Once when I was cooking for them, he told me the full recipe, so by the time they came again, I surprised him with that dish, and he really appreciated it. I is called jerk chicken, a kind of cinnamon-y, sweet and spicy chicken, and the person who got this is Mitch Lucker, singer of Suicide Silence. I miss him quite a bit, because those few times we met, he told me a lot of things which I would not think he would, so he must have found me likeable...

You are not only cooking for rock and metal bands, what is your experience with bands from other genres?

They are just like anybody else. I think that you can find drama queens both among metal and pop musicians. The difference is that in such cases, I try to conceal it that the genre is not really my cup of tea by taking it easy, because they ask my thoughts about the performance a lot of times. I usually say that it was cool, it is just not my style. Surprisingly, there are quite a number of bands I especially enjoy. I would say that with other genres it is more natural and easier to get them what they want. As an example, I'll never forget when last year the tour manager of Anthrax came to me and said: "Thank you Szandra for giving us what was specified in the rider". It turned out that the whole summer I was the only one doing this, although it was just a turmix, a bowl of fruit, and some fish dishes, for heaven's sake. Talking about other genres, Bob Marley's son, Julian Marley and his band ate only fish. I have not cooked salmon many times, but they absolutely loved it. They did not really need my company, the crew was easy-going, but they were a bit more distant, and this might be pointed as a difference, but there are of course more friendly people even in this genre, so the differences are not really that huge.

You have told about a lot of negative and positive experience in the past. What are the most memorable moments from last year?

One negative aspect is that sometimes we have to work in complete swelter. This summer I was catering for Deep Purple, that day was very demanding because of the heat. The band had no extra requests, and they were very nice. What's more, keyboard player Don Aiery even recognized me because I have served him on A38 before, so the outcome was absolutely positive. Fortunately we do not encounter other kinds of negative experience very often. Mitch's death was a very sad moment for me, because, as I said before, he was very close to my heart for some reason. The last thing I would point out is that sometimes the bands leave the dressroom in such ruins. It is surprising how many times it happened last year. Might be they were distracted or I don't know.

There have been a number of positive moments. There was something at every concert that got out to me. There are a lot more positive things in fact, because everything gives me a kind of fresh buzz. I often receive presents from musicians, just because. They thank me for the food and whoop for me. Believe me though, I only do catering. The following is an interesting story, however it did not happen last year.

I have cooked for Amon Amarth many times before, where one of them had a different point of view of things, and he also changed during these years since they got more and more famous, but this is just my opinion. It happened at a festival that they asked for a certain kind of wine, which I substituted with a Hungarian one, but he did not like it, and even he could not tell what he wanted. It was a holiday, everything was closed, but we managed to get him two different kinds of expensive wine, I myself took it to him, but you could see that he was not pleased. It was a tough day, the rest of the band could also see that I was getting short of patience, unlike other times, so I left him there with his three bottles of wine and I ranked off to cry because I was so upset.

The concert was done by, we partied a bit afterwards, everything was fine again, but I could not forget what happened. Last time they played in Club 202, the catering was not provided by me, but I could be there. I was asked to go to the backstage, and two members of the band started off by apologizing to me because of his behavior two years ago. They bade him to join as well and they explained to him why he was such an idiot. By the way, he was one of the first ones I caught that night, and he was hugging me as if I was a close relative. So, people can change, and the whole team can feel it based on the impulses they get from outside. The bands try to pull back on someone when they see that they have taken things too far, and they apologize for them. This makes it even more worth to do it.

You emphasize the fact that your job is not only to provide catering, why do you see it to be so important to care about the musicians' psyche as well?

First of all, this comes from the inside, I am a motherly type. My fiance always says that I should not put my trust in just about anybody, and that I should not be so friendly, because not everyone deserves it. But this is who I am, it is in my genes, I cannot change it, even I tried, but it did not work after a certain point. Anyhow, I am no longer that "snicking along" type. I am more efficient in situations where there is any kind of misunderstanding, even if it is not about me. Many small conflicts can arise during the day, between the band and the venue, the band and promoters, the band and me, even between the band and their fans, which can be aided very smoothly once people have trust in you, even only after a few minutes. This gives you a good foundation so that people know they can turn to you. When you have this, you will trust them as well. There are people with whom this works easily, because they are more open and we act as if we were friends for ages, and then there are people whom I have met like fifty times before and they still keep their distance. This is only natural, as they come from different countries, ethnical groups, and not everybody is such an informal type, yet they know who I am and they appreciate my work, as I do theirs, so we do not intrude into each other's space. There are some who write to me even when they do not come to Hungary. Of course the first and foremost is that if a musician feels good here, they will do better on stage as well, which is ideal for the audience and they would gladly come back again. It is much better than if they went to stage mumbling curses and gave a shitty concert because something went wrong.

The stereotype that the musician is the most problematic still holds. Is that really so?

There are at least as many problematic individuals in the crew as well, and sometimes they even believe that they are bigger stars then the people they come with. You cannot really cope with that, but fortunately it is a very rare occurrence. Most of them likely had a bad day, or some kind of illness that was not communicated to us before, and when you wanted to shake hands, they told you they couldn't. This might seem insulent first, but then you come to understand it once you get to know the reason behind it. And let's not forget that crew members's days are about traveling a lot, and when they arrive, they maybe have time enough to go to the toilet, take a bath, and run some errands, maybe half an hour. They eat in the meantime, they do not have time to sit down and read some email or anything, because they have to start getting ready for the show, so they have about an hour to take care of all their personal business, from the time of arrival. Then they pack, build up the stage, they don't stop until dinnertime, they have about two hours to relax some, and then the show begins. And finally they pack everything back, and on to the next venue... They have a really stressful life, but of course there are natural assholes among them too, or someone who has some kind of health issue, that can vary from alcoholism to anything really, and this has an impact on me as well. Once again, this is very rare, but can happen.

What gets a rise out of you?

It would be pointless banter, yet if I don't live up to some expectations and the feedback is just, I am ok with that. This is a tough question, because it has only happened once or twice so far, and that was mostly because I was tired. I tolerate pressure well, I chug to myself or some close friends, and I try to avoid anybody dump on me. It is really not easy to answer... there are many little things that make me upset, but my reaction depends on the level of tiredness I am at. I try to get on well with everybody. At times being squirty ruffles my temper, but I can cope with it. It takes a very extreme situation for me to truly rage. I aim to solve the situation already before I lose my temper. So, luckily there are no such cases.

We have heard a lot about your guestbook, I believe many people would like to get it. I would love to get a taste as well, quite literally. Besides, you have a significant photo collection. Did you manage to take a photo with every musician you have met?

Unfortunately no. There's for example Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), I was not lucky enough to make it. I was the coward though, because I have had three chances and I missed all of them. I really wanted to have a photo with him, but somehow I felt like he was not the "Szandra, let's take a photo" - kind of person. Honestly, on top of this, I am lazy. I also have to admit that if they are not so easy-going, I am reluctant to go there and say "come, let's take a photo just for the sake of it". Of course I try to take a photo with everyone, and the collection is notable too. Actually right now it's total chaos among the pictures, I am trying to figure out how to group them together. Unfortunately many of them are already dead, with whom I had very pleasant experience, and I'll never forget them. I could tell a story about any of them which relates to me.

And of course there is the guestbook. I did not even have it in the first year, it was my friend Gyula Havancsák who brought up the idea. He was the one who asked me why I didn't start one, because it is a cool idea. At first I was not really interested, but then I realized that it could be relevant. It was Gyula who designed my first pages, and he even printed them for me. I was not really into the computerized world back then, but it's getting better and better by now. So he edited these for me and put on the logo, and later on it was my friends who prepared the pages till I got my own computer and printer, and then I started to take care of this myself. I also neglected it at times, so I apologize to those I have not yet printed or the logo is not yet done for some reason.

How many pages do you have by now?

It's unbelievably huge, nearly 600 pages scanned, but this is only half of it. It embraces a lot of memories which reflect a given situation, it has many cute drawings and humorous entries. There is only one negative comment in my book, but I have to point out that all of the things that the person listed as negative aspects, I ticked all of them, because everything was in place. Whatever, you need these as well, he must have had a bad day.

Are you still planning to publish your stories?

Yes, I have plans, however only in my head. I need certain inspiration to do it, as for anything else, and I would like to work together with somebody who would write these things down. Not because I am lazy to do it, but because if we would do it together, an objective person would see it more clearly what is interesting to the people. I believe though that I alone could make it interesting, but the presence of another person would certainly be supportive. Not to mention that it is freaking hard to remember. I try to use a dictaphone, but gradually I turned these things adrift. I forgot a lot of stories, I receive a lot of impulses during times when we work three-four days in a row, and it's not sure I remember what happened on the first day, maybe I am getting old. I have about 20-30 dictaphone recordings, but these are concerts when nothing nameable really happened, but still, these help me remember. I hope one day I will manage to publish the book. Far from me to act like a prig, but these things are valuable for me and as I look back upon the number of reads of my previous interviews, for other people too. Gossip is always exciting. I don't think I am a blabbermouth, but when people ask, I answer in certain circumstances, till the story permits it.

You have mentioned it before that you don't want to publish it in Hungarian. It would be a pity, because we could draw a lot of lessons from it as well.

I may or may not have changed my mind about it, the point is that I would really need somebody who keeps nagging me about it and writes it all down. This is a terribly huge task, and it would take at least a year to complete it, because you would have to investigate a lot of details and nuances, given that I forget a lot and I don't want to appear untrustworthy. I need to get in touch with the people I was working with, maybe they would remember something that happened in the given situation.

I hope it will be reality. On a different topic, what relics do you have in your considerable collection?

A lot of things! I got a number of guitar picks that resulted in a new craze in collecting, my drumstick collection has expanded, but other than that I don't categorize my stuff, I store my things "in bulk". But my Christmas tree this year was decorated with the memories throughout the year. I made the ornaments from stage passes and other things, this was like a summary of my year. Last year I received a gift that really touched me and I still cherish it. I went sightseeing with Eyehategod, as they asked me to accompany them, because their guitarist Jimmy Bower remembered that I took him and his fiancée for a little tour around. The drummer, the singer, two crew members, the guitarist and the tour manager girl, with whom I am still good friends. It turned out that she has worked as personal assistant for celebrities, but she loves this genre, and that is how she ended up here. Point is, we went to the city and since one member's wife is of Hungarian origin, he wanted to surprise her, so I took them to a gift shop where they bought nearly everything, and I even got them a discount, so they felt really good. When we were on the way home, I got a wristband that I cherish ever since. The whole day was a blast, but two weeks afterwards came the news that drummer Joe LaCaze died. I was smitten, see, so much for a human life... I am glad I had the chance to get to know him and that I could spend a couple of hours of his life with him, I could make him feel good and buy him an ice cream. I will never forget that day.

I'm missing your pentagram apron. Do you still use it?

Yes, I do, but I have heard that according to some promoters the pentagram is not appropriate to wear when it comes to some bands, so I don't always wear it, to fill their requirements. I don't always need it anyway, it is very long so I trip over it, but this is my own clumsiness. Sometimes I even forget it, or I put it out but I leave it at home.

Is it a kind of mascot? How did you get it?

Honestly, I really like these icons. One of my private logos is similar as well, that will be the basis for my new apron which I have been planning for two years now, and of course it is not done yet, but will be later on. I am not this slow in all things, but there are priorities. It is good to know that there are only three aprons like this in the whole world. Apart from me, Phil Anselmo and Dez Fafara have it, both of them got it from me. I had the apron with me when Down was here, because a couple of weeks before that Dimmu Borgir was supposed to play with Simen (I.C.S Vortex) who loved my apron at their previous concert. I love his music, I am a great fan of Arcturus. So I promised that I would have an apron made for him, nevermind that we haven't even met since, but maybe now when Borknagar will come. Hopefully I will manage to finish the new apron, and then he will be the fourth one to wear it.

Back to Phil, I did not plan to give him the apron in advance, but he was very friendly. I have always loved Pantera, and I came to like him already after a few minutes. He was full of energy, running up and down. I said, ok, you can get the apron. He checked it out, then he gave it to his girlfriend, but he became so enthusiastic that he started to show us his tattoos and told us that in his swimming pool there is a pentagram highlighted with red lights which is made in a similar style, and without Hungarian Black Metal Club written over it.

Fafara got it because he also loved the apron, whenever they came, he always told me that he wanted one. In the end a friend of his, who was their tour manager I believe, "ordered it" for him so to say. Of course I did not charge him for it. We went to Linz to see Devildriver and Behemoth, and I gave it to him there, it made him very happy. By the way, when they performed in Pecsa before, he was in a very bad mood, he was just walking up and down and then he was on the phone with somebody for a long time. I went past him many times, and he was always on the phone, and then all of a sudden he just called out to me and said "Szandra, Lamb of God sends their regards". I was completely taken aback, because I have met Lamb of God only once, at Metalfest, and we were chatting only for a couple of hours, and that was their only time in Hungary so far, and they still did not forget me. They sent their greetings to me, even though it was years ago. It it a hell of a feeling that when Fafara mentioned Budapest, I was the first one to come to their mind, and they remembered my name...

On that line, what was the biggest acknowledgement to you?

Truth is, there have been a lot. Every acknowledgement is huge to me, I could not name just one. It has happened that I was asked to join the band on stage in the middle of the show and they said thanks for my job, there have been some who dedicated a song to me, and all this means an awful lot, especially when it comes to my favorite band, incredible. A Finnish band, when they did not want to bother with anyting before they set out on their journey home, gave me their leftover merchandise, which meant a box full of shirts, vinyls and CDs. Once I gave a whistle to one of the bands, and they used it on stage afterwards.

I happened to get a couple of plastic swords at a celebration on 1st of May, which Lordi then builds into their stage decor, with the drums. What I will surely never forget – some say it was humiliating, but I don't think so – has happened twice so far. First with Jon Oliva's Pain, when at the very end of their show they gave me a band cap full of euros that they collected for me. The second time it was Fear Factory and the Devin Townsend Project who collected tips for me, and I even got the tour pass from Fear Factory, even though a couple of venues were ahead of them. I get shirts a lot of time. Immolation named me in an interview they gave for a foreign paper as the world's best catering provider. Many people have tour diaries, and it feels really good to be mentioned in it. When I was a bit under the weather emotionally, a well-known person offered to help me. All in all, many people have a positive attitude towards me. I myself do not ask for anything from them. You get what you give, this is how the world rolls. Of course there have been times when I was totally bored by being thanked so many times, even though different people came to me at different times to say it.

I meet a lot of people who complain about there being too few quality concerts and tours that would come to Hungary as well. Why do you think it is so?

There are many reasons. One being that nobody can live up to everybody`s expectations. That a band does not come to Hungary, can have many reasons as well. The first can be that they don't want to, because of certain principles, like Six Feet Under. It is very rare though that some bands don't come because they have a problem with Hungarians, although it is worth to consider. As I see it, the main reason is that promoters here simply cannot pay the bands to come. Why is that? Well, because many people cannot afford the ticket to a show, or they are lazy to go and support the bands they like and the promoter as well, so that they could get to other bands in the future. In general it is the money that decides in such situations, because it is not so that the bands come, they play, and then they get the money and it's done. There are a lot of requirements when it comes to the background work. They send the riders only after the contract is signed, and this is when you have to face the real costs. Of course it is not too late at this point to rearrange, to think over what a promoter can and cannot provide. But an awful lot depends on this, not to mention that you have to rent a suitable place, you have to pay for the sound- and light engineering, in many cases you have to find accomodation too, etc. So you have to consider whether the ticket price covers for all these costs, and if people do not even come, the organizer can lose a lot of money. The third reason would be, when there is "bidding" for the same day, for example when you can choose between a show in German that would pay triple and one in Hungary that just pays single, it is not really a question where the concert will take place...

Of course I see that every band would like to come to us as well, but circumstances are not irrelevant to them, and you cannot blaim anybody for this. I believe people are often too stupid to cope with such things, because it is easy to drool how great it would be if this or that band came, and when they finally make it, the people are not there. I would love to ask back, why you did not come then? On the other hand, there are people who are present at every concert when they can afford it. Unfortunately it comes down to money most of the time. People in Hungary nowadays cannot afford to go to every considerable event on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. I do not agree with the notion that there are not enough concerts in Hungary though, I can't even count how many concerts there are featuring foreign bands, not to mention all the Hungarian ones. There actually is local talent who should be given a chance instead of looking for excuses. To sum it all up, people are lazy, and if I want to be more good-natured, we can say that money is an obstacle. Not to mention how much merchandise sales have declined at these concerts. Obviously this is a choice, but I have noted that at times there is not even demand for live music itself.

Unfortunately this indifference is most noticeable when it comes to Hungarian bands, the reason being that they are not original. At the same time, tribute bands thrive like never before. I just can't get the knack of it.

There are some good tribute bands for sure, I myself do not promote this. Of course I happened to find myself at a tribute concert, I listened to them, but for me it is unimaginable to pay for a tribute festival. This is a really trendy thing around here nowadays. If you take a look around, it is not so characteristic abroad anymore, people have grown out of it. My point is, I appreciate it more when somebody plays their own music. There is no problem with cover songs, if they like it and it serves as an inspiration to them, this is a sign of respect, but when somebody builds a tribute band on this and wants to make their own gains from somebody else's success, and on top of it they do it badly, is totally incomprehensible for me. Once you get your head around doing something like this, you should be professional in the least. In theory, a tribute band should be about redefining the songs of your idol to your own taste, that can even appeal to me. If somebody runs a tribute band side by side their own band, I accept that, because I can correlate, but how could we talk about own style in the case of those who only have a tribute band?!

Now that the end of the interview is coming, let's have some fun. What are those events in 2014 that you are looking forward to the most?

I was really looking forward to the first Death By Metal festival, where my fiance performed with his band, Kill With Hate. Finally an event which was a bit about a kind of underground alliance. I am looking forward to the Borknagar show as well, which is also going to be a very interesting event, and of course a lot more about which I have some information, but these are not yet public. Among the festivals, I am looking forward to Fezen and the first-timer festival Aerodrome in Budapest Park, we are also planning to go to Vienna to see Cradle of Filth and Behemoth. I am convinced that they cannot come to Hungary because the two bands and their "miscellaneous" would have cost too much, which would have been impossible to produce. Anyway, I am looking forward to all of the shows, because it has happened before that I discovered someone during their concert, and of course it has been the other way around, that I loved some band on an album and they were a disappointment live.

Alright, now it is time for the last questions. What is your motivation for doing what you do?

Relationships with people, that is what gives me strength to go on. Not the acknowledgements, not success, but those people whom I got to know during all these years, it feel so good to see them again, and I can feel it even without words that they know I am there and they can rely on me, even if we are not friends as such. It feels good to me to know that they are there and to know what their needs are, because during those few hours we spend together, I have to familiarize myself with their habits too. Some people close up, but I understand that at times this is what they need. A lot of times I am taken aback when I see them again, it is interesting to see how differently people can behave at a given point. It really is these relationships that keep me going, even if for some reason I cannot cook for them, I am always present at their shows, thus supporting them. This way there is someone whom they know they can rely upon. Many times they ask my opinion after the concerts, and I am totally honest with them, at times they might not like what they hear, but I try not to hurt anybody, but when they ask, I answer. Usually when I don't really like the show, I say it was ok, but not my style. Even I cannot like everything.
